Wasn't sure where this belonged so I'll just post it here.
I'm curious about my family history, mainly my dad's side, little things I've heard over the years I think there were some loose units in the past with my surname lol. (One example I remember my dad telling us once he had either an uncle or a great uncle that fought in one of the world wars and while he was over there, he killed a French officer and took his gun) that's some wild shit lol.
I've heard 2 brothers came here from Germany in the 1700s or 1800s, and me and all my cousins and shit on my dad's side are descendants of one of them, and there are a bunch of super distant relatives in another town that are descendants of the other brother. That's interesting as well.
It'd be cool to know more about the two brothers, how many generations are there between them and me, and more about those people too. I don't really know anything past like grandparents, and the last one of them died before I was out of nappies, so I can't exactly ask them.
I had a bit of a look on ancestry.com but that site is a fuckin pain to navigate and I couldn't find much. I dunno. Would be cool to know all that shit but yeah. I might ask my dad about it next time I'm home and on the piss with him or something but that doesn't happen all too often anymore.
Something else that's kinda crazy is how these people are basically lost to time, but my descendants are gonna be able to look me up on google or some shit and probably even have AI generate my exact image, voice, personality and memories for them to see and talk to.
Just something that's been on my mind lately

Sure, it's interesting. I think my roots are in England and Scotland, maybe Ireland. I know my grandfather in Scotland was a train driver but sounded to me not a particularly pleasant person. It should be easier if you use the internet or maybe join a forum on ancestry searches. There are also books - in fact I found one in a charity shop and nobody wanted it. I suppose it got thrown away.

My mum did an ancestry test a while ago too and it came back she was more norwegian than she thought lol, (assuming those aren't bullshit) so I'm basically an Australian German viking lol. I think there's some welsh on my mums side too and a bit of Italian somewhere on my dad's side. But yeah that makes me a full white Aussie that has no (or very little) English ancestry which is crazy in itself lolFulgurator wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2024 9:59 pm Sure, it's interesting. Speaking of Scotland and Scottish people too I remember my first introduction to a Scottish person was an old alcoholic Scottish dude known as "scotty" that lived a few houses down from us when I was a kid. I remember one time some teenagers on bikes were riding around outside and I dunno what started it but they were antagonising him and he grabbed a big pair of garden sheers and started chasing this kid on a bike walking after him with them lol, and his pants kept falling down so he eventually just ditched them and he's chasing this kid around fully nude with a pair of garden sheers
eventually the cops came and got him lol.
I also remember he didn't really like us as kids but as we got older and entered our late teens and early 20s he suddenly liked us and would stop for a yarn and shit lol. He told us a wild fuckin yarn about his housemate that he kicked out. And eventually we just heard that he died, I dunno how old he was but I feel like he was in his 60s when he was chasing that kid around with the sheers lol, so he must have been in his 70s? I dunno. He was pretty fuckin loose but mostly harmless I think, and it's weird that we never really did anything to him but he decided he didn't like us as kids but did as adults lol.

A lot of people you take for English are far from it. Christopher Lee wasn't English. Boris Johnson isn't. I found an interesting book written by a Welsh monk about the post Roman British Isles. Lots of druids. The Scotts were walled off to stop their cross border raids.theforsaken wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2024 4:50 amMy mum did an ancestry test a while ago too and it came back she was more norwegian than she thought lol, (assuming those aren't bullshit) so I'm basically an Australian German viking lol.
